Twenty-four are forced to enter. Only the winner survives. In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. Each year, the districts are forced by the Capitol to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the Hunger Games, a brutal and terrifying ?ght to the death - televised for all of Panem to see.
Survival is second nature for sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who struggles to feed her mother and younger sister by secretly hunting and gathering beyond the fences of District 12. When Katniss steps in to take the place of her sister in the Hunger Games, she knows it may be her death sentence. If she is to survive, she must weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

Chapter 3
After the anthem ends Katniss was taken into custody. Katniss is given an hour to say her good byes to her family before she leaves for the hunger games. Then the peacekeeper comes to the door to get Katniss because her time is up. Katniss gets asked to wear Madge’s gold pin for the one this she is allowed to wear from home. Then the game is on and she is on her own now.

Katniss (Catnip) has headed in the remake center. She meets her stylist and gets her hair all over her body ripped out and gets checked butt naked. Peeta and she go as tributes for district 12 and impress the crowd.

It's the first day of training and Katniss is mad because Haymitch and Peeta always look alike "with their twin act." After breakfast they train and Peeta is doubting his skills but Katniss reassures him.

Chapter 8
Katniss is worried that she has scored a low score on the scoring number in the games . It turns out Peeta scored an eight but Katniss pulls an amazing eleven. These are outstanding scores for district 12. Then she starts reminiscing about the days in the woods with Gale....
She finally falls asleep and in the morning she walks into an room to find Peeta, Haymitch, and Effie huddled around the table in hushed tones. She soon finds out that Peeta has asked to be coached separately.

Chapter 9
The games begin in two days and trust will be their biggest weakness. Katniss goes to Effie for four hours to learn presentation and then to Haymitch for content for four hours too. Effie tells Katniss what to wear and what will make her present better when the games start. Then Effie tells Katniss to remember, “You want the audience to like you.” Then Katniss finds out they are betting on how long she will live.

Chapter 10
Katniss is confused about Peeta because he had just announced that he loves her. She still thinks he is just putting on a show then when they enter the games he is going to kill her fast. But that's not the case. Later on she begins to get nervous because the game will begin in less than an hour. She remembers to run and find water. And the rest will follow......

Chapter 11
The games begin!
Katniss steps onto the platform as it leads her up to the stadium. If she steps off the platform onto the field before waiting a minute she will be blown up. Katniss sees that a bow and a quiver of arrows are sitting on the stack to survive on. She runs toward them. She fights a boy but not for long because a girl threw a knife into him and he spits blood on Katniss's face. Then Katniss recognizes a voice who had grouped up with other people. . . Peeta.

Katniss is looking at Peeta and sees all of the bruises on him. Peeta goes back to make sure the girl was dead, but she wasn't. Peeta finished her off. All of this is happening while Katniss is in her sleeping bag in a tree. Katniss is in desperate need for water and is getting mad at Haymitch because he could send her the water she needs but he isn't. Katniss is cracking. She is about to pass out because of how weak she is. Anyone could take her down right now. Then she finds water and it saves her life. She is starting to feel better again.

At the beginning of this chapter, Katniss is hallucinating from the Tracker Jacker venom. When she finally comes to her senses, she searches around for some water. At this point she is in a very bad condition. In addition with three huge Tracker Jacker stings, she has cuts and bruises all over her body. She also has a huge burn on her calf. After she finds water, refreshes herself, and treats her burns and stings, she and Rue meet up and form an alliance.

Peeta, who has been wounded, is now her ally. The two are still having to act like they are in love with each other. At this point in the competition, there are six tributes left; and Katniss is developing a strategy. With Peeta wounded, this is not an easy task. When Katniss finds Peeta, she takes him to the nearest stream to treat his wounds and give him some water. At the end of this chapter, Katniss and Peeta receive a gift from their sponsors.
