This unit is to practice on our note taking skills. You will find additional notes here that will not be in the movie or in our classroom discussion, but will be on the open notes test! Everything handwritten is acceptable as notes for the test. You will also find several extra credit possibilities.

The Characters

The Gods and Goddesses

  • Zeus
  • Poseidon
  • Hades
  • Athena
  • Hermes - Luke mentions that Hermes has been to the underworld several times. Why? In mythology, Hermes is the god that takes your soul to the underworld. Otherwise you would be a lost soul doomed to wander the earth in misery.
  • Persephone - she is not in the book. The reason is that this story takes place in summer. Persepehone is only with Hades in winter. Somebody made a goof there. The questions for you is why did they add her when she was not needed? What does she add to the story?
  • Dionysus - the god of wine. He doesn't make it into the movie. He is called Mr. D. in the book and he runs the camp because he is being punished by Zeus. Part of the punishment is that he cannot make and drink wine, so he drinks Diet Coke instead.

The Demigods

  • Percy Jackson - son of Posiedon
  • Annabeth - daughter of Athena. She is the brain child of Athena because Athena does not "hold hands." Although Annabeth doesn't show it in the movie, she has a crush on Luke because he helped her when she was younger. Annabeth has grey eyes in the movie. That is because her mom is known for her grey eyes.
  • Luke - son of Hermes. Luke has some real issues with his dad. Much of the problems in this series stems from the gods not having anything to do with their children. This is a rule that Zeus made up. In the book he has a nasty scar down his face.
  • Clarisse - daughter of Ares. She does not appear in the movies. She spends much of her time picking on Percy Jackson.

The Mythical Characters

  • Grover - a satyr (half goat). Grover disguises himself by wearing jeans and tennis shoes. This makes it really hard for him to walk using his goat legs, so he uses crutches. In the book, he also had to wear a hat to cover up his goat ears. He is Percy Jackson's protector.
  • Mr. Brunner / Chiron - a centaur (half horse). He disguises himself when he is in the normal world by sticking his horse part into a magic wheelchair.
  • Medusa
  • Minotaur - this is a monster that has a bull head and human body. He kidnaps Sally. Percy kills him with his own horn, which broke off in the fight. In the books, Percy keeps the horn as a souvenir. All monsters (in the books) leave behind a little souvenir when killed. They also do not stay dead. The minotaur will be back in the future.
  • Ms. Dodds - a fury. In mythology, there are three of them and they go after humans who committed crimes, but got away with it.
  • Hydra - acts the same way in mythology as it does in the movie, except it does not breathe fire. It is a water dragon, not a fire dragon.
  • Lotus Eaters - the only difference is that the real lotus eaters are malicious (wanting to cause problems).

Humans

  • Sally
  • Gabe

Other Stuff

  • Riptide - the name of Percy's pen that turns into a sword
  • Hades (the place) - the underworld. Hades does not look like hell in mythology.

The Olympians

These are the books that tell Percy Jackson's story. The Sea of Monsters is based largely off of The Odyssey. Keep checking here and I will put up some extra credit if you read these books.

This is the graphic novel of the same story. Because it is shorter, it has to leave out things that the book and movie were able to include. If you read this graphic novel (I have a copy in the classroom) and do a report on it, I will give you some extra credit (it will go into the test average). The report will need to be neat and you should proofread it.

Here is what I'll be looking for in the report:

  • It should be typed and about two pages.
  • You need to point out what you liked about reading it in comic form.
  • You need to point out what you did not like about reading it in comic form.
  • What does it have that the movie left out?
  • What does it leave out that the movie had?
  • Which did you like better, the movie or the graphic novel (or the book if you read that)?
