So What Exactly Is This All About?

You are going to read a book of your choosing and complete five activities on it. The activites are not meant to be overly difficult, but to evaluate your engagement and comprehension. Once all five are completed, the grades for each will be averaged together for one grade.

Here is what you must do before the project starts:

1. Pick a book

You can pick almost any book you want as long as it is in your Lexile range. Lord Alford will provide you with your Lexile score. Use the chart to the right and find where your Lexile falls. You can pick any book that also falls within that range or higher.

For example, Joe Student has a Lexile level of 720L. That falls in the 660L - 820L. Joe Student can pick any book that has a Lexile rating of 660L or higher.

If you get one of Lord Alford's books from the back of the room, it should have a Lexile level written in orange on the inside of the back cover. For books not rated, I have either put a guess in red or put a red X on the inside of the back cover. A book marked with a red X is OK for anyone to pick.

Do you want to pick another book either from home or the library? No problem. You can find the Lexile level of that book by going here: https://fab.lexile.com/search/results See Lord Alford if you have any questions.

Did you find a book that falls outside under your Lexile level, but have a compelling reason for why I should allow you to read it for this project anyway? Just show me the book and I'll make a judgement call.

2. Break the book into thirds (not physically!)

You can do this either by chapter or page count. You will have an activity (on a Google Doc) after the first third, after the second third, and after the final third. For each third, you will be given a bookmark. This will help you keep track of what you are going to have to do in your activity for that third.

YOU MUST SHARE THE GOOGLE DOC WITH ME AFTER COMPLETION IN ORDER FOR IT TO BE GRADED!
(You would think this would be obvious, but...)

3. Before you begin reading...

Start by completing the first Google Doc of the project. You can find it below!

So when is this due?

Well that depends on your reading speed. Here are the suggested due date

  • Before Reading - Dec. 5th
  • First Third - Dec. 10th
  • Second Third - Dec. 14th
  • Third Third - Dec. 18th
  • After Reading - Dec. 19th
