
| Isis was one of the most important Goddesses in Egyptian mythology. Her Egyptian name was "Auset", but the Greek and Roman mystery religions revered her as Isis. She was was known by many titles such as "She who gives birth to heaven and earth", "She who seeks justice for the poor people", and "Mother of the gods." Isis also represented many things including wind, the great enchantress, and great magic. She was one of the four protectors of the dead. Cult centers were Egy[t at Giza, Behbeitel-Hagar, Dendera, Abydos, Esna, Edfu, and Philae. Due to her attributes as a protector, and motherIsis was identified with Persephone, Tethys, and Athena by the Greeks. When Ptolemy introduced the worship of Serapis, Isis was depicted asa his wife. However he could not compete with her mass appeal. The citizens were fascinated with her because of her exotic rituals and she gave hope for a happy life in the next world. |
| Depictions
Isis' name literally means "Queen of throne", which is why she is seen wearing a crown which resembles a throne. This also symbolizes her as the protector of Osiris. Egyptians believed that knots represented magical power. Another Symbol of Isis was the Knot of Isis, or Tet. It was a funerary amulet made of wood, stone or glass. The amulet represented enternal life and ressurection. This protects the mummy. The star Sothis was identified with Isis because it marks the flooding of the Nile and Isis was a fertility goddess. Sothis also follows Orion, which is identified as Osiris, in the sky. This symbolizes that she will never leave his side. Myths Two popular myths starring Isis include her searching the entire world to find her husband's dismembered pieces and then she magically resurrectes him. The child of her magical union with Osiris was Horus, who is usually depicted as a hawk-headed god. |

Outside of Egypt The cult of Isis rose to prominence in the Hellenistic world, beginning in the last centuries BC, until it was eventually banned by the Christians in the 6th century. Agustus considered her too pornographic and felt it would destroy the Roman moral.
